the long story
Carol, a homemaker, now studio artist and instructor and Kara, a graphic designer with a love of fashion, decided to officially start a small cottage industry in 2009.

how did they get started?
Rice Rafferty was conceived when Carol was studying in the masters fiber design program in Savannah and Kara was working as a designer in New York.  Carol Ann and Kara have always been design enthusiasts - appreciating fine art and design; adding their personalized touches whenever and wherever.  They were both frustrated working apart; when Carol moved back to Buffalo they quickly decided it was time to stopping putting off their lifetime dream of owning a small business.

Carol (the mother) is a fine artist and has been designing clothing from the age of 15.  Her work has been juried into the Fiberart International 2007, Craftforms International 2006, as well as numerous national shows, and published in 500 Paper Objects Lark Craft Book. Former instructor of fiber design at Buffalo State College, Carol won a Fellowship Research Grant in 2005.  Her research and notes expanded teaching curriculum in the Fiber Program.

Kara (the daughter) is a marketing specialist who has worked in the NYC fashion industry.  Kara has work experience in product development, marketing, trend forecasting, and art direction.  She has worked in the field of costume jewelry and home goods.  Kara's five-year career in marketing has played a key role in inspiring new creative direction for Rice Rafferty.

how did they get their name?
Rice is Carol's maiden name and Rafferty is her married name.  Rice is Kara's middle name, so "Rice Rafferty" became a logical touchpoint.

Rice Rafferty is a company for women by women. They incorporate up cycled vintage materials in many of their items and many of their fabrics are hand dyed.  They value the process of their work as well as the finished product.  Their accessories can be worn or hung on the wall as artwork. They can incorporate your grandmother's cherished jewelry pieces (like pins, earrings, bracelets) into a completely unique and sentimental design.  Their mission is to create timeless, eco friendly, and vintage inspired accessories creating special family heirlooms for you to treasure for many years to come.

They have branched out to focus on the bridal market and now sell their designs on Etsy and will soon be branching out to boutiques in the Jacksonville, FL area.  Customers/brides have the option of choosing a ready-to-wear piece or scheduling a consultation with Carol or Kara for a custom creation.  Rice Rafferty's goal is to help their clients find accessories to compliment their personality and make their customer's dream come true.
